뉴욕의 7-80년대 미술을 이야기할 때 결코 빼놓을 수 없는 전설적인 그룹 ‘픽처스 제너레이션’에 속했던 데이비드 살레는 만화, 광고, 그래피티를 아우르는 대중문화 이미지와 미술사적으로 가치있는 시각적 요소를 몽타주 기법을 통해 대조적으로 배치한다. 서로 다른 요소들의 역동적인 병치는 시적인 부조리를 만들어내고 관객들에게 신선한 아이러니를 선사한다. 

30대에 1986년 구겐하임 미술관에서 ‘구겐하임 펠로우쉽’을 수상하며 작가적 능력을 인정받기도 한 데이비드는 2009년 메트로폴리탄 미술관에서 신디셔먼, 바바라 크루거 그리고 셰리 레빈 등 1980년대 미국을 풍미했던 또 다른 스타 작가들과 함께 ‘픽처스 제너레이션’이라는 이름으로 전시를 하며 자신의 미술사적 위치를 공고히 했다.
